Bio Wall

Picture-14.jpg

Introduction

We have been commissioned by Surface Design and Bombay Sapphire to design a screen/ room divider to be presented at New York Fashion week in September 2005.

We want to create a modular building system based on structures in nature and have been looking at several geometries such as the PenroseTiles and SyneticStructures

We were initially very excited about the prospect of using actual plant matter to divide a space and have taken the analogy of hedges to mark space and territory outdoors and bring this to an interior. We originally wanted to create a dividing partition with plants inspired by the botanicals that make up the Bombay Sapphire gin, but are now concerned with developing a structural unit where plants could grow around.

We have chosen BioWallWeave from the structures below, based on structures seen in nature from bubbles to plant cells. We are looking to weave 3-dimensionally with small circles of fibreglass rods (1mm) to create a strong and flexible wall or room partition.

Structures

We looked at 3 different structures and geometries to create a free standing screen
