Phenology

Natures calender

growing.season.gif

Phenology is the study of the times of recurring natural phenomena
especially in relation to climate change.

This usually means recording and comparing the life cycles of plants
and animals, for example the dates of bird migration, plant budding,
flowering or fruiting, insect activities, stages of birth and death are
all annual events of interest to phenologists.

Our live maps offer you a great chance to witness the seasons changing
around the UK on a daily basis. Observations appear on the map as soon
as they are entered onto our database by a recorder.

You can choose to view our animated maps (requires flash), hover over
a point to see when it was recorded and using the slider explore for yourself
the progress of autumn. Or view the original live, but static maps, on
which the most recent record is circled. Autumn 2003 was as warm as,
but much drier than autumn 2002 which resulted in an earlier appearance
of autumn colours. The hot summer was responsible for the intensity of
the colour. What will 2004 bring?

Global Phenological Monitoring

The Global Phenological Monitoring-site (GPM) gathers links and information
on phenological research and data sets. The GPM-site offers the opportunity
to put your own phenological information on the internet! Your own phenological
activities or research and links to interesting pages can be added to these pages.
The index in the left part of your screen will help you guide through the GPM-site.
